What Is BOPP? BOPP Film for Labels
BOPP, or biaxially-oriented polypropylene, is the standard film facestock for durable self-adhesive labels. Stretched in two directions during manufacture, it becomes thin, strong, and dimensionally stable, and it is fully waterproof and resistant to oil and most chemicals. It is what people usually mean when they say 'vinyl' or 'plastic' labels.

In more detail
BOPP comes in white, clear (the 'no-label look'), and metallised silver. Its toughness and moisture resistance make it the default for beverages, cosmetics, cold-chain, and any product that meets water. LeRoy Print Packs runs BOPP facestocks across its pressure-sensitive label work.
Strengths
- Waterproof and resistant to oil and chemicals
- Tough, resists tearing, scuffing and moisture lift
- Flexes with squeezable containers without wrinkling
- Clear BOPP gives a premium 'no-label' transparent look
Things to consider
- Costs more than paper facestock
- A plastic film, less easily recycled than paper labels
Best for
Beverage, cosmetics, personal-care, and chemical labels: anything facing water, oil, cold chain or squeezable containers.
Common questions
Is BOPP the same as vinyl?
People often use 'vinyl' loosely for any plastic film label, but technically BOPP is polypropylene film: cost-effective, waterproof, and the standard for FMCG and beverage labels. True vinyl (PVC) is thicker and more conformable for outdoor/industrial durability. For most product labels, BOPP is the right film.
Is BOPP film waterproof?
Yes. BOPP is fully waterproof and also resists oil and most chemicals, which is why it is used for beverages, chilled products, cosmetics, and cleaners. Paper labels wrinkle and lift in these conditions; BOPP stays intact.
What is a clear 'no-label look' label?
It is a label printed on transparent (clear) BOPP so the container shows through and only the printed graphics appear, the popular frosted/transparent look on premium water, spirits, and cosmetics. It needs careful artwork and adhesive selection, which we guide.
