What Is Kraft Paper?
Kraft paper is a strong, tear-resistant paper made by the kraft (sulphate) pulping process, the same process that gives it its name and its characteristic strength. Left unbleached it is the familiar natural brown; bleached, it becomes white kraft. Its high tensile and tear strength make it the standard material for paper carry bags and corrugated liners.

- Kraft (sulphate) pulping, high strength
- Colours
- Natural brown (unbleached) or white (bleached)
- GSM range
- 80 – 250 GSM for carry bags
- Strength
- High tensile and tear strength
- Flexo/offset; natural texture shows through

In more detail
Beyond strength, kraft has become the visual shorthand for sustainable, natural packaging. LeRoy Print Packs uses kraft across paper carry bags in a range of weights and both brown and white finishes.
Strengths
- High strength for its weight, ideal for load-bearing carry bags
- Natural, eco-friendly look that signals sustainability
- Recyclable and biodegradable
- Takes print, foil, and lamination for branded bags
Things to consider
- Brown kraft mutes printed colours (natural base tone)
- Absorbs moisture unless coated/laminated
Best for
Paper carry bags, shopping bags, and eco-forward retail packaging where strength and a natural, sustainable look matter.
Common questions
What GSM kraft paper is used for carry bags?
Retail paper carry bags typically use 100–250 GSM kraft. Lighter bags (100–120 GSM) suit garments and light goods; heavier bags (150–250 GSM) carry more weight and feel more premium. We match the GSM and handle type to the load and the brand.
What is the difference between brown and white kraft?
Brown kraft is unbleached: stronger, cheaper, and with a natural eco look, but it mutes printed colours. White kraft is bleached for a cleaner, brighter surface that reproduces colours better, at a slightly higher cost. Both are strong; the choice is aesthetic and about print.
Is kraft paper eco-friendly?
Yes. Kraft is recyclable, biodegradable, and made from renewable wood fibre, which is why it is the go-to material for sustainable packaging. Uncoated kraft is the most easily recycled; heavy lamination reduces recyclability, so we advise on finishes that keep the eco benefit.
