Rigid Box vs Corrugated Box
These aren't really competitors. They're partners. Use a rigid box when presentation is the point and a corrugated box when protection and cost are. For premium products sold online, the best answer is both: a rigid presentation box cushioned inside a corrugated shipper. Tell us the product and where it's sold and we'll design the pairing.

Choose a rigid box when
- The unboxing moment is part of the product: gifting, premium retail, electronics.
- You want foil, embossing, magnetic closure, or a soft-touch finish.
- Perceived value and shelf presence justify a higher unit cost.
- The box will be kept and reused by the customer.
Choose a corrugated box when
- The job is to get the product there intact and affordably.
- You need flat-pack storage and fast assembly at pack-out.
- You're shipping at volume through couriers or freight.
- You want low cost per box and quick, repeatable production.
Background
Rigid boxes and corrugated boxes are built for opposite jobs, even though both are 'boxes'. A rigid (set-up) box is a premium presentation package: thick grey chipboard wrapped in printed paper, the kind of box a phone or a watch arrives in. A corrugated box is a protective shipping container built from fluted board.
The confusion usually comes from wanting one box to do both jobs. LeRoy Print Packs makes both, and the honest answer is that they're rarely interchangeable. Most premium products use a rigid box for presentation inside a corrugated box for transit.
Common questions
Can a rigid box be used for shipping?
On its own it's a poor shipper. Rigid boxes protect against crushing far less than corrugated, and they ship pre-assembled so they're bulky and costly to move. The standard approach is to place the rigid box inside a corrugated shipper for transit.
Why do rigid boxes have a higher MOQ and cost?
Rigid boxes involve more hand-work. Greyboard is cut, the printed wrap is applied and turned in by hand or semi-automatically, and finishing like magnets or ribbon is added. That labour raises both the minimum order quantity and the per-box cost compared with automated corrugated production.
Can you print premium finishes on both?
Yes. Rigid boxes take foil, deboss, soft-touch and magnetic closures beautifully. Corrugated can also be elevated: F-flute with litho-lamination gives near-carton print quality on a protective box.
