Folding Cartons vs Corrugated Boxes
It's not either/or. It's a stack. The folding carton sells the product on the shelf; the corrugated box gets a case of them there intact. A typical FMCG line uses a printed mono carton as the primary pack and a 3-ply or 5-ply corrugated case as the shipper. We produce both in-house, so a single supplier can align the primary and secondary packaging and the case count between them.

Choose a folding carton when
- You need the printed, branded pack the shopper sees and picks up.
- The product is a single retail unit: medicine, cosmetics, food, FMCG.
- Print quality and finishing (foil, emboss, spot UV) matter.
- You want a low per-unit cost at retail scale.
Choose a corrugated box when
- You need to ship or store many folding cartons together safely.
- The product is heavy or needs cushioning against drops and stacking.
- The pack is a shipper or e-commerce mailer, not a shelf unit.
- Transit protection is the priority over print finesse.
Background
A folding carton and a corrugated box sit at two different layers of the same supply chain. The folding carton (or mono carton) is the printed primary pack the customer picks up on the shelf, such as a toothpaste box or a medicine carton. The corrugated box is the secondary pack that holds many cartons together and protects them in transit.
They're made from different materials for different jobs: folding cartons from flat paperboard (FBB/SBS) for print and presentation; corrugated from fluted board for strength. LeRoy Print Packs makes both, and most FMCG and pharma brands need both.
Common questions
What is the difference between a carton and a corrugated box?
A carton (folding/mono carton) is made from flat paperboard and is the printed primary pack a customer holds. A corrugated box is made from fluted board and is the stronger secondary pack used to ship and store many cartons. Different material, different job.
Is a mono carton the same as a folding carton?
Broadly yes. 'Mono carton' usually refers to a single-piece folding carton in FMCG and pharma, often with simpler printing than a premium folding carton. Both are flat paperboard primary packs. We produce mono cartons and premium folding cartons as separate lines.
Can one supplier make both my carton and my shipper?
Yes. That's a real advantage of an integrated manufacturer. We produce your printed folding cartons and the corrugated shippers that carry them, and align the case count, dimensions, and dispatch schedule between the two.
