What Is Hot Foil Stamping?
Foil stamping (hot foil) presses a thin film of metallic or coloured foil onto a design using a heated metal die. The die transfers the foil to the sheet exactly where the design sits, leaving a bright gold, silver, or coloured metallic finish that ordinary ink cannot reproduce.
In more detail
Foil stamping is how packaging gets a true metallic shine. A metal die is engraved with the design, heated, and pressed onto a roll of foil laid over the sheet. The heat and pressure release the foil from its carrier and bond it to the material only where the die touches, giving crisp gold, silver, copper, holographic or coloured metallic elements.
It's a finish reserved for where it counts: a logo, a brand name, a border. Because real metallic ink is dull by comparison, foil is the go-to for luxury cartons, cosmetics, spirits, and wedding stationery that need genuine shine.
Foil pairs especially well with embossing. Stamped and sculpted together, the element is both metallic and raised. There's also cold foil, applied without heat inline on press, which suits different designs and volumes.
Key points
- A heated die transfers metallic/pigment foil to the sheet
- Gives true metallic shine that ink can't match
- Gold, silver, copper, holographic, and coloured foils
- Combines with embossing for a raised metallic effect
Common questions
What is the difference between foil stamping and metallic ink?
Foil stamping applies a real metallic foil for a bright, reflective shine, while metallic ink is a printed ink with metallic particles that looks comparatively dull. For a genuine gold or silver effect, foil stamping is the choice.
What is the difference between hot foil and cold foil?
Hot foil uses a heated metal die to transfer foil, giving crisp, premium results and pairing well with embossing. Cold foil is applied without heat inline on the printing press, which can be more efficient for certain designs and larger areas.
